Letters Introduced

  • As the year progresses we go on to highlight a letter of the week.  This is when we introduce the alphafriends.  Each letter has a character and song to go along with it.  Music is a great hook for the kids.  Although our reading program is not a letter of the week program we still use this focused time to work on penmanship, the sign language, letter sound and unique characteristics of a letter (phonic type activities).
At home you could review the letter sounds and formation of the letters.  Remember when writing nearly all letters should begin at the top.  We are working hard to have kids "writing" letters and not "drawing" them.  The best place to practice writing is for a child to lay on their tummy with a clipboard or on a Magnadoodle type toy.  It is more natural to begin at the top when laying down.
