The Millburn Board of Education is one of twenty school boards to earn this distinction awarded by the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB). This recognition is designed to acknowledge those school boards that have engaged in activities and modeled behaviors that lead to excellence in local school governance in support of quality public education.

The application process for this recognition is rigorous and requires the involvement of board members and the superintendent over a two-year period.   Evidence is shown in the areas of:

    • Commitment to following IASB Foundational Principles of Effective Governance
    • Connecting with the community on issues of importance to the district
    • Implementation of a superintendent annual evaluation process
    • Conducting regular policy reviews and maintaining an updated policy manual
    • Monitoring progress toward district ends (mission/vision, goals) with the use of data
    • Implementation of an orientation process for newly seated board members

Superintendent's Message

  • Dear Millburn Community,

Over the summer Bernadette Hanna handed me a document that was written by a former superintendent at Millburn, and I found it very interesting.  I am wondering if you can guess what year the following excerpt was written?

The School Year XXXX-XX could probably be called the year of confusion for American Public Education.  You could, with only the effort of asking a question about education, get an opinion from almost anyone or any group on the state of our schools.  The candidates for President and other federal offices had education opinions, the Governor of the state had an opinion, religious groups had opinions, and probably you and your parents had, and have opinions.  As I observed our students, teachers and most parents, the Millburn Community felt our school was on the right track even though we were not perfect.  Millburn school represents a school which has only one goal – educating children to be successful future students and adults in this world.  As another year passes, we continue to believe this is what education is all about.  We do not intend that education at Millburn will abandon this objective in the future.

I often wonder how much has really fundamentally changed over the past thirty years?  Have we “figured out” education?  Is there still confusion?  Have we changed for the better, or worse?  Yes, Mr. Framke wrote the above passage to parents after the 1984-85 school year, over 30 years ago!

Here is what I do know.  Millburn school continues to have one goal- educating students to be successful in their future endeavors.  Our staff has worked exceptionally hard in maintaining a focus on our students’ educational experience during some VERY challenging times.  I am proud to work with a staff that is so dedicated to our children’s education!

Millburn continues to produce strong academic performance even through drastically increasing class sizes, a transition to new state standards, a new grade configuration, decreased funding, and leadership transition.  This is a testament to how we have all worked together for a common purpose.   Our circumstances may have changed, but our core principles have not been shaken.

    Sincerely,

    Jason Lind
