Gifted Information

  • CROSSING MY DESK.....

Below is some information about upcoming events and other gifted information. Items will be posted as they arise!  Have a look:

The Illinois Association for Gifted Children is hosting their annual conference February 2nd - 4th, 2017.  It will be in Naperville at the Marriott.  Saturday, February 4th is specifically designed for parents from 9:00 am to noon.  The opening speaker is Jim Delisle, who is a wonderful person to listen to!  He is especially interested in the social-emotional development of gifted children. There will also be breakout sessions after his presentation.  The closing speaker is Kathy Nilles and her topic is "10 Essential Tipe for Gifted Children's Success."  For more information and registration, contact IAGC at 847.963.1892 or convention@iagcgifted.org  (posted 12/5/2016)

My new favorite book is, The Gift of Failure, by Jessica Lahey.  While it is not written specifically for gifted students, it does deal with the idea of appropriate struggle and making mistakes as the way children learn.  She is a parent and an educator, so she addresses both sides of the issues.  Consider picking up a copy.  On Amazon, there is also a short video of the author speaking about her book.  (posted 12/5/16)

If you are looking for enrichment classes for your child to take, look into Northwestern's Weekend Enrichment Program (WEP).  The application/enrollment process is open now and closes January 10th.  There are a variety of classes offered at various locations including things like Water Works and Forensic Science.  Classes are offered for ages 4 - 14 (9th grade).  This may be a perfect thing during the long Chicago winter!  (posted 12/5/16)

SUMMER OPPORTUNITY:  The Summer Institute for the Gifted (SIG) is a multi-week residential program for academically talented students ages 9 - 17.  One of the sites for SIG is the University of Chicago, although they have many other sites across the country (and in London!)  For more information, go to SIG.info@GiftedStudy.org or call 866.303.4744.  There is financial assistance available, also.  (posted 12/5/16)
